Rehabilitation Services

Pocahontas Memorial Hospital offers a variety of Rehabilitation services for both inpatients and outpatients. Inpatient services are provided on a short term basis for folks hospitalized in acute care or observation status, as well as Swing Bed patients when needed. In many cases, discharged hospitalized patients return as outpatients to continue their recovery without a change in therapists. Outpatient appointments are available for anyone in the community with a medical order.

We are also extremely pleased to offer Physical Therapy services in two off campus locations in Cass and Richwood to better serve our patients. Occupational Therapy is also available on an as needed basis. To schedule, please call:

PMH’s rehabilitation services are available in the following areas:

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy addresses restoring function following a wide variety of surgeries, medical conditions, and trauma. Patients are closely supervised as they practice special exercises to recover mobility and strength. Procedures include: therapeutic exercises, gait and balance training, pain modalities, heat and cold, and specialized exercise equipment.

Pocahontas Memorial Hospital’s Physical Therapists Bevin Saul and Melanie Taylor provide a full range of physical therapy services for the community.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy focuses on helping people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of meaningful daily activities (occupations) and exercises.

For children, this can include sensory integration, handwriting, and fine motor skills necessary to be able to participate fully in school and social situations.

For adults with upper extremity injuries or impairments, including tremors, carpal tunnel syndrome, de quervain’s syndrome, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff impingement, and tennis and golfer’s elbow, occupational therapy can help people recover from an injury to regain skills to be able to complete their meaningful daily activities.

For older adults, this can include training in modification and adaptation of bathing, dressing, eating, writing, and being able to access the home safely.

For example, a stroke may leave a person unable to use their right hand. Occupational Therapy could help that patient regain range of motion and strength in their right hand as much as possible, and teach the patient how to modify tasks such as self feeding, dressing, bathing, toileting, and leisure activities as needed through use of adaptive techniques and equipment/devices.

Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy is also offered through the Rehabilitation Department. Speech therapy is not just for children, but for adults as well. Speech therapy can provide life-changing treatment, support and care for people of all ages who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

Skilled Nursing (Swing Bed) Program

Swing Bed is a skilled nursing program that you can be admitted to after any qualifying illness or surgery to receive rehabilitation therapy or special medical treatments. Therapy is available in not only physical, occupational, and speech, but respiratory therapy as well. Treatments would include wound care or IV antibiotics. For more information about the Swing Bed program and qualifying information visit the Swing Bed page.

If you are interested in receiving any of these services at PMH, please contact the Rehabilitation Department at 304-799-1015.

“What sets us apart at PMH is our hallmark practice of treating one patient at a time, and the continuity of always having the same therapist. We treat you like a neighbor.”
